Boards & Committees

Advisory Board
Whenever a warrant for any Town Meeting contains an article or articles under which an appropriation of money or expenditure of money will be made, such article shall be considered by the advisory Board and its recommendation reported to such meeting.  The Advisory Board is subject at all times to call on the Selectmen for advisory purposes.

Board of Appeals
This board hears and decides administrative appeals, interpretation appeals, and requests for variances filed in connection with decisions made under the Town's Shoreland Zoning Ordinance.  This board has authority to grant special exceptions or conditional use permits in strict compliance with said ordinance.  The Appeals Board has jurisdiction over appeals filed under State Law relating to special amusement permits.  The Appeals Board also hears appeals from decisions made under the Farmland Registration Law by local officials, and challenges to the eligibility of a parcel of land to be registered under the law, and appeals of the Town's Site Review Ordinance.

Board of Assessors
The Board of Assessors are elected at Town Meeting and serve three-year terms.  They are responsible for the assessment of real estate and personal property, as well as keeping property values equitable and at fair market value.  They meet several times a year to discuss valuation, to set the tax rate and to discuss applications for abatement and supplemental taxes.  Please see agendas for meeting time and location.

Board of Ethics
This board shall render advisory opinions to the Selectmen when there is doubt as to the applicability of any provision of the Code of Ethics to any particular situation.

Madison Public Library Board of Trustees
The trustees are responsible for overseeing the funds held in trust to the Madison Public Library, maintaining the building and grounds and oversee the library staff.

The Board consists of 5 members who are elected at Town Meeting to serve 5-year terms.

Madison Electric Works Board of Directors
The Electric Works Board oversees the activities of the electric utility.  This is a five member board who are elected at Town Meeting and serve 5-year terms.

Planning Board
This Board shall perform such duties and exercise such powers as are provided by municipal ordinance and state statutes including, but not limited to, the comprehensive plan, land subdivisions, shoreland zoning, and the site review ordinance.  This is a 5 member board plus 2 associate members, who are appointed by the Board of Selectmen and serve 5-year terms.

Comprehensive Plan Update:Common Vision for Madison
is a community development project aimed at bringing together a cross section of residents to help shape a ‘user-friendly’ plan for the town’s future.  The first of these meetings will be held Monday night January 7th at 6:30pm at the meeting room at Old Point Elementary School.  Residents are encouraged to review information packets prior to the meeting.  Packets are available at the town office and on the town’s website.   The topics for discussion at the January 7th meeting include the Town of Madison Administration and Town Office and Public Safety (Police, Fire, and Ambulance).The calendar and Information Packet for Common Vision for Madison are available here for downloading and/or printing.

Recreation Committee
This committee coordinates all volunteer activities and supervises the operation and functioning of all recreational programs.  This committee is responsible for recreational planning, assessment of community recreational needs, seeking out sources of funding for recreational planning, recreational programs and development of recreational facilities.

Solid Waste and Recycling Advisory Committee
This committee is responsible for reporting to the Selectmen issues of concern pertaining to the current municipal solid waste and recycling operations.  They promote recycling efforts within the Town.

SAD #59 School Board
SAD #59 Board of Directors are elected to serve three-year terms.  Madison has 6 members on the School Board.

Sanitary District
The Board of Trustees of the Anson Madison Sanitary District are elected and serve three-year terms.  Madison has 4 members on this Board.

Selectmen
The Board of Selectmen are elected to serve 3-year terms.  The board consists of 5 members.

Water District
The Trustees of the Madison Water District are elected to serve 3 year terms.  The Board has three members.
